Collaboration for Ex-situ Conservation

National Genebanks keep a copy of their accessions in the international genebanks and at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault as safety duplication. However, community seed banks do not have such arrangements.

Therefore, CSB Nepal facilitated the process of sending local crop diversity conserved by member community seed banks to the National Genebank of Nepal for ex-situ conservation.

On 29 December 2014, 15 community seed banks from 12 districts affiliated to the CSB Nepal gathered at the secretariate and handed over 916 accessions of 62 crop species with passport data to the then chief of the National Genebank Mr. Madan Bhatta in a formal ceremony organized at the Agyauli Community Seed Bank, Nawalparari.

The event was witnessed by a scientist from Bioversity International Dr Bhuwon Ratna Sthapit, Chairperson of LI-BIRD Mr, Krishna Prasad Baral, and local government representatives.
